Lestrup Racing Team chases STCC victories in the Skellefteå midnight sun

Lestrup Racing Team heads to the very north of Sweden where the sun barely sets for the second STCC TCR Scandinavia round, chasing victories during the Midnight Sun Race.

”We got a lot of positives from the Ljungbyhed opener but nobody in the team is pleased until we are on the top step of the podium. We know where we need to improve and we are working hard on this ahead of Skellefteå. The conditions are there for us to take a step further forward in the results and that is where our goal is for this weekend,” said Fredrik Lestrup, co-founder of Lestrup Racing Team.

The Skellefteå round also means that the STCC race format returns from just one race in Ljungbyhed to three races this weekend.

Oliver Söderström, who finished third in the season opener, is aiming two places higher this weekend.

”Third was an okay start to the season, but to be honest, I’m not pleased. I want to win, as always. If we just can improve our race pace, then I think we can seriously attack for victories this weekend. We are going to continue to work hard and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Oliver Söderström.

Andreas Bäckman had a tough but promising start to the season, his first STCC TCR Scandinavia race for Lestrup Racing Team.

The Swede started further down on the grid after a mistake in qualifying, but fought his way up through the field to finish fifth.

”The first race didn’t really end like I hoped, but the car was quick and I could make progress up the field at Ljungbyhed which is a hard track to overtake on. And that’s what I’m bringing to Skellefteå. I’m just as for the previous race lacking experience of the Skellefteå circuit, but my goal is to extract as much as possible from the car in qualifying and then fight for the podium in all three races,” said Andreas Bäckman.

The Skellefteå race weekend starts on Friday with testing and qualifying, followed by three races on Saturday from early afternoon to late evening – all broadcast LIVE on: plus.stcc.se

Lestrup Racing Team starts 2022 STCC season on the podium

Lestrup Racing Team driver Oliver Söderström opened the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season strongly by qualifying on the front row and secured a podium finish in the Ljungbyhed feature race.

”To qualify second with a brand new Audi that we got less than a month ago feels amazing. I lost one place at the start unfortunately, that’s never enjoyable. I wasn’t quite happy with the balance of the car, but I am really pleased to finish on the podium and a huge thanks to everyone in the team as they’ve worked around the clock ahead of the premiere,” said Oliver Söderström.

Team-mate Andreas Bäckman made his STCC debut for Lestrup Racing Team this weekend, having never previously raced at the Ljungbyhed circuit.

The 26-year-old qualified tenth after a mistake on his Super Pole lap, then fought his way up through the field to finish a strong fifth behind the wheel of his brand new Audi RS 3 LMS II.

”It was a really exciting race where I fought my way from tenth to fifth. Unfortunately the top four had broken away by then, so I had to focus on just taking the car home after that. It’s been a tough weekend for me as I’ve never raced here before, but the overall results from this weekend bodes well for the coming races,” said Andreas Bäckman.

Lestrup Racing Team leaves the STCC opener in third place of the teams’ standings while Oliver Söderström is placed third in the drivers’ championship and Andreas Bäckman fifth.

”We’re never pleased until we are on top of the podium, but I think we can head home pleased considering the circumstances. We’ve only started to scratch the surface of our new Audis and we have plenty of data to digest and evolve for the next race in Skellefteå where we will push for more podiums,” said Fredrik Lestrup, team co-founder.

The next STCC TCR Scandinavia race takes place on June 17-18 at Skellefteå.

Lestrup Racing Team starts Audi era this weekend in the 2022 STCC opener

Lestrup Racing Team will start a new Audi chapter in the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia premiere at Ljungbyhed this weekend.

Drivers Oliver Söderström and Andreas Bäckman will take on a bigger and stronger STCC field behind the wheel of two Audi RS 3 LMS of the new generation, coming from a strong Hockenheim endurance race two weeks ago.

”We are excited and motivated ahead of the STCC season start which will mark a new era for us with a brand new and highly competitive Audi model,” said Fredrik Lestrup, team co-founder.

”The endurance race in Germany was a perfect rehearsal for us with the new cars, but with that said, we have a lot of information still to digest and we will face competitors with more track time in their cars. It’s no doubt going to be tough this year. Our goal is nonetheless set on fighting for the titles, we are here to win.”

Oliver Söderström claimed the junior title and finished fourth overall last year behind the wheel of the older Volkswagen model.

”This season is going to be crazy exciting and we’re going all in,” said Oliver Söderström.

”Hockenheim was really good for us to get laps in the car and to get to know it. I think that me and Andreas [Bäckman] will be really close, that’s going to spur us both forward. The goal this year is to win and we’ve got strong conditions with the new Audi.”

Andreas Bäckman made his debut for Lestrup Racing Team in the Hockenheim endurance race, finishing on the podium together with team-mate Oliver Söderström.

”I feel ready for the season start, but I think it’s going to be challenging for me as I’ve never raced at Ljungbyhed before,” said Andreas Bäckman.

”Hockenheim was really important for me as I could get to know the new Audi and get to know the team. And the fact that we were able to secure a podium is something we all bring with us to the first STCC race. My goal is to learn the track as quickly as possible and work together with the team to secure a strong result.”

The Ljungbyhed opener will feature a unique format of a single-lap ”Super Pole” qualifying and a single race of 18 laps. The remaining races will just as last year feature three races per weekend.

Lestrup Racing Team starts 2022 with a pole and podium at Hockenheim

Lestrup Racing Team started the 2022 season successfully, debuting the all-new Audi RS 3 LMS to a class pole position and podium finish in the 12 Hours of Hockenheim endurance race.

”This was a rewarding start to the season and a very valuable preparation for our 2022 STCC title push,” said Fredrik Lestrup, team co-founder.

”We had some hiccups along the way this weekend, but that is to expect with a brand new car. But out drivers performed really well and we got really good race data that’s hard to recreate during regular pre-season test sessions.”

The team fielded two cars for the Hockenheim race, one brand new Audi RS 3 LMS II for Oliver Söderström, Andreas Bäckman, Marcus Fluch and Emil Sällberg.

The Swedish quartet put the Audi on the TCR class pole on Friday, with the four drivers then fighting hard to finish third in the race after some technical issues.

”It was great to start the season with a podium and to properly get to know the new Audi. We lost about 20 minutes in the pits due to an issue, so I think everyone can be pleased with the result. Now we are going to reload and get ready for the STCC opener at Ljungbyhed,” said Oliver Söderström.

”I’m really glad to be a part of this result in my first-ever race weekend with the team. It was a really valuable weekend for me to get to know the car with plenty of kilometres. Everything didn’t go our way during the race, but this was a proper rehearsal of what is to come this year in the STCC,” said Andreas Bäckman.

The second car, a Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, was driven by Peter Fahlström, Stefan Nilsson, Mats Olsson och Christian Axelsson.

And the Volkswagen quartet qualified eighth and fought their way up to finish the race in fourth position.

Next up for Lestrup Racing Team is the STCC TCR Scandinavia opener on June 3-4, more info at: stcc.se

Lestrup Racing Team makes Audi switch and starts endurance season

Lestrup Racing Team will switch to the brand new Audi RS 3 LMS model for the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season, having raced Volkswagens since 2017.

”This is a critical switch for us in order to remain competitive and reach our goals of fighting for the STCC titles with the latest machinery,” said Fredrik Lestrup, co-founder of Lestrup Racing Team.

”The new Audi is a considerably more competent race car with more setup possibilities, enabling us as a team to tailor the cars much better to the preferences of our drivers.”

The team will start its racing season this weekend by fielding one of its two new Audis for the 12 Hours of Hockenheim in preparation for the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season which starts during the first weekend of June.

Oliver Söderström, Andreas Bäckman, Marcus Fluch and Emil Sällberg will share the Audi during the endurance race this weekend, while the second car is yet to be delivered from Audi Sport.

”I can’t wait to get the season going this weekend and to make my debut in the new Audi, it looks awesome,” said Oliver Söderström.

”This will be a perfect opportunity for us to get to know the new car and to prepare for the STCC season with plenty of driving. And while this is primarily a preparation, I think we can be competitive this weekend and challenge for a top position in the TCR class.”

The team is also going to field one Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR at Hockenheim for drivers Peter Fahlström, Stefan Nilsson, Mats Olsson och Christian Axelsson.

The last endurance race of Lestrup Racing Team was the 24 Hours of Dubai in 2020, scoring a class pole position and race podium finish.

Oliver Söderström targets title in fourth STCC season with Lestrup Racing Team

Reigning junior champion Oliver Söderström has got his sights set on the most prestigious motorsport title in Scandinavia as he will start his fourth STCC TCR Scandinavia season with Lestrup Racing Team this year.

”I am aiming for the title, it is the logical next step forward for me and the team,” said Oliver Söderström.

”We had a season of ups and down last year, but I see that as something positive as we know where we need to improve for this season. I feel really motivated and I know that we have the pieces of the puzzle to challenge for the title on a new level.”

The 23-year-old has steadily improved his results in the STCC, finishing eleventh in his debut season, fifth in 2020 and fourth last year.

”Oliver crowns our strengthened programme for 2022 and the entire team is just as motivated as him to take on the titles this year,” said Fredrik Lestrup, co-owner of Lestrup Racing Team.

”We are delighted with our line-up, to have Oliver joining Andreas Bäckman, and we are confident that we have one of the strongest line-ups of the championship this year. And that will be needed as we’re facing a really tough field.”

Oliver Söderström, who claimed the 2015 Formula Renault NEZ title, joins new team-mate Andreas Bäckman and the duo will drive two brand new TCR cars of a yet to be revealed manufacturer.

”The new car is a real boost for us as we struggled in some areas with our old car last year,” said Oliver Söderström.

”There are of course additional challenges in switching to a new car. But we struggled a lot in qualifying and on the straights last year, something we should not do this year. I’m really excited ahead of when we reveal the new car.

”I also want to extend a big thanks to the team, my sponsors and my family who have made this possible.”

The 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season starts on June 3-4 at Ljungbyhed in Sweden.

Andreas Bäckman joins Lestrup Racing Team in STCC title hunt

Andreas Bäckman has joined Lestrup Racing Team for the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season, setting the goal as high as possible.

”It feels awesome to join Lestrup Racing Team, a young and progressive team, and my ambition is to win the championship together with them this year,” said Andreas Bäckman.

Bäckman returns for his first full STCC season since 2018 after spending three years abroad in TCR Europe and most recently the FIA World Touring Car Cup.

”I think the entire STCC paddock was impressed by Andreas’ performance at Mantorp Park last year and we are delighted to have him onboard in our goal to reclaim the STCC titles this year,” said Fredrik Lestrup, co-owner of Lestrup Racing Team.

”We’ve had our eyes on Andreas for a while now and he has taken big steps forwards over the last couple of seasons. We have plenty of work ahead of us to get ready for what is to come and I have no doubt that he can deliver.”

The 26-year-old made a one-off appearance last year in the STCC races at Mantorp Park where he stunned the field by claiming pole position.

”That race weekend left me with a taste for more and we found a really good setup with Lestrup Racing Team where I feel that I have the conditions to fight for the very top,” said Andreas Bäckman.

”We have set the goal high, but I know that I have the speed and I know that the team can deliver. It is going to be tough as we will face a lot of experienced drivers, but I do feel confident and can’t wait to get going.”

Lestrup Racing Team is going to field two cars this year, switching to a new manufacturer for the 2022 STCC season.

”Andreas is our first piece of the puzzle for the 2022 season and we are going to reveal further details over the coming weeks,” said Fredrik Lestrup.

”I can say as much, we are going to have a thoroughly competitive package for this season and our goal is firmly set on bringing the STCC titles back to where they belong at Lestrup Racing Team.”

The 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season starts on June 3-4 at Ljungbyhed in Sweden.

Lestrup Racing Team moves into new Stockholm facilities in strengthened 2022 STCC assault

Lestrup Racing Team has moved into new facilities in Stockholm as part of its strengthened title assault for the 2022 STCC TCR Scandinavia season.

”Our goal for 2022 is firmly set on bringing the STCC titles back to where they belong at Lestrup Racing Team and a key part to this is our new facilities in Stockholm,” said Fredrik Lestrup, co-owner of Lestrup Racing Team.

”We plan to run a minimum of two cars in the 2022 STCC season.”

The team has moved into new 400m2 facilities in the Swedish capital that are dedicated to its STCC programme.

”The new facilities are like night and day for us regarding efficiency, performance and development of our STCC cars and everything connected to it,” said Fredrik Lestrup.

”We have space to maintain up to four cars and this is a vital part in our expansion for the future.”

Lestrup Racing Team finished second overall in the 2021 STCC teams’ standings, with Oliver Söderström clinching the junior title as well as fourth overall in the standings.

Team-mates Mikael Karlsson and Robin Knutsson claimed a victory each during the season, finishing seventh and ninth overall respectively.

”While we did not achieve our main target of defending our drivers’ and teams’ titles, we had a good year with competitive pace and the focus for 2022 is to put all pieces together,” said Fredrik Lestrup.

”We have absolutely no doubt on that we have what it takes to challenge for the 2022 titles and we will reveal more information about our drivers for the coming season in due course.”
